Talks & Discussions!

Hi everyone! Its Lauren here, it is around 8pm and we have had an eventful day! This morning even though some of us (including me!) woke up a bit late we got the day rolling and attended mass. After, I was able to come back to the McKenna center and talk with some of the guys. Jacques was one of the guys I had a nice conversation with. We really hit it off discussing books, and our shared love for author John Gresham. Then, Allison and I talked to Latif who really opened up to us about his life in Africa, his personal relationships, his children and also his journey here in DC. It was surprising to me how much he was willing to share about his life, but also very inspiring. Hardships are a part of growing in life, but it truly depends on what you chose to make of those failures that will determine your future successes. This lesson is reflected in many of the conversations I have had with the men, a lesson they had to learn the hard way. They care so much about our well-being and want to make sure we don’t repeat their mistakes. We were divided into groups among the men. We talked about the roadblocks that have occurred in our lives and ways to reduce the frustration and anger that can come in those situations. What one man told me really holds true to any situation, he replaces negativity with positivity. He said that in any hardship if you can take out the bad, you are already halfway to the good. I was also very surprised because the men in my group did not focus on the bad times, but repeatedly said that they were happy in their lives, and had nothing to complain about. They are all truly inspiring people who are filled with great insights, one just has to take the time to listen. Even though this is only day two I have already learned so much from the men, and can’t wait to see what the rest of the week brings!!

Until next time! Love Lauren!

Tearing Down Walls!

Today, we continued our mission in deepening our understanding of ourselves, each other, and the problems that poverty and inequality bring. Our day began as usual; sleepy-eyed and ready to help the Father McKenna center in any way possible. Our duties included cooking the meal and serving it, cleaning the center, organizing the pantries, and generally trying to make ourselves useful and helpful. While very important, these tasks were not the catalyst in the change that we experienced today; through talking to the many guests at the McKenna center, to those who live on the street, and to those who were willing to share their life with us, we have begun to break down the divide between “us and them.” And we have realized that we are not so different after all. While the magnitude of our problems might be different, it is what we share that makes us one family of brothers and sisters. From the infections laughter, to the stories of our homes, to our losses of our loved ones, or to the si...

Our first day

What a day! Our trip left right on schedule this morning at 10 am and it is now close to midnight as we finally settle in for bed. Our group had the opportunity to explore Georgetown and visit a local Walmart to grocery shop today. We are already becoming more aware of the poverty that exists even in affluent areas like Georgetown. Ned, the Father McKenna Center Volunteer Coordinator met us and showed us the place. He explained their food pantry, clothing donation, hypothermia, and day shelter programs. The group is exhausted, but excited to start our journey tomorrow as we fully immerse ourselves in this eye-opening experience! And it all begins with sleeping on pews tonight....  The DC crew will be ready to rock n'roll tomorrow! Good night. Sweet dreams. -Maggie McKernan
